5 Song Lyrics That Speak to My Soul

Do you ever hear a song and think “wow, this song was written for/about me?” Is there one line in one song that describes your entire life? I think we’ve all felt like that about one song or another. Here are 5 song lyrics that I feel sum up my life perfectly (please note I’m leaving the theatre lyrics out or else this would be 100% theatre lyrics).

“I’m just some dumb kid trying to kid myself that I’ve got my shit together.” -Lost Boy by Troye Sivan

Being 19 is hard. Being 19 is very overwhelming. You’re expected to be an adult maybe living in a different city for school away from your parents, having to pay your bills, having to buy your own groceries, driving yourself around, having a job and not having a clue how to do any of that. You just have to figure it out for yourself for the most part. And on top of that, you’re trying to get enough sleep, get good grades, and have a social life. Sometimes life becomes very overwhelming. I can pretend I’m organized and cool and confident about my life but that’s not usually the case. I try to keep a calendar with everything in it to make me seem like I’ve got my life together but most of the time, I just look at the calendar, see how much stuff I have to do, and panic. Sometimes I just want my Mommy to make me a good meal that’s not grilled cheese and tell me that everything will work itself out.

“Here’s to the fools who dream.” -Audition (The Fools Who Dream) from La La Land

Everyone has dreams, whether they’re practical or not. You might dream of curing cancer. You might dream of building a skyscraper. You might dream of being a professional dancer. You might dream of having a family. Dreams are often seen as this far off destination that you can never reach, kind of like the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. But dreams are also what keeps us going. We do what we do so that we might find that pot of gold, no matter how crazy or foolish or useless it seems. We pay thousands and thousands of dollars get a degree in science so we can cure cancer or build a skyscraper. We train 40+ hours a week so we can be a professional dancer. But that’s the way it should be. We should do crazy, foolish (not that getting a science degree is foolish), even seemingly irrational things to make our dreams come true.

“I’ve come a long, long way, made a lot of mistakes, but I’m breathing, breathing, that’s right and I mean it, mean it.” – Invincible by Hedley

Storms (the album that this song is from) got me through one of the worst times in my life. I had just started struggling with my mental health when this album came out. This song means so much to me. It helped me see that I’ve come so far but I’m still alive and breathing and that’s what’s important. It also helped me see that I can overcome my challenges and become Invincible. As you may or may not know, I still struggle with mental health issues and I always come back to this album and this song when I’m feeling down.

“You’ve got one life to love what you do.” – It’s Not Right for You by The Script

This one’s pretty self-explanatory. Life’s too short to hate what you’re doing, especially when there’s so many wonderful things in this world to do. It’s not always easy, or even sometimes feasible, to chase your dreams but that doesn’t mean you should give up on them. This is especially hard for people (like me) who have dreams of doing something in the arts because we’ve all been told art won’t pay the bills or put food on the table. But if you’re completely miserable sitting in an office all day, is it really worth it? Your happiness should be paramount. We live our best, most productive lives when we’re happy. So never stop doing what makes you happy and do it in whatever capacity you can.

“Before I save someone else, I’ve got to save myself.” – Save Myself by Ed Sheeran

I have a really bad habit of putting everyone else before me and I forget to take care of myself. I have wants and needs too. Honestly, sometimes I let myself get stomped all over and that usually ends with me having a depressive episode for at least a few days. This song reminds to make myself a priority because in the end all you have is you (most of the time). You are your best friend and your worst enemy. There is only one of you and you are valued and important, so please take care of yourself. It’s okay, in fact I recommend, that you put yourself first.

Do you have a song(s) that speak to your soul? Let me know in the comments!
