Everyone’s always waiting for this movie and that movie to be put on Netflix or digging through the depths of the Internet to find a free torrent so they can watch it on their 13-15 inch laptop screen. But I feel like movies are an art that is meant to be experienced on the big screen, they’re just so much better and here’s why:
1. The sound and picture quality
Movies were made to seen on 20ft x 50ft screen with complete surround sound. That’s just something you can’t get from watching a movie at home. Seeing a movie in this size allows you to see all the details of the costumes, the sets, the acting and more and it lets you hear everything the way the sound designers intended. The big screen and amazing sound also has the power to completely pull you into the movie world. You’re there in the moment with the characters experiencing what they’re experiencing, which is pretty cool if I do say so myself. And this is just standard movies. You can’t seen an IMAX or DBOX movie at home, you have to experience that in the theatre where they have all the technology to give you that experience.
2. There’s nothing else to distract you
When you’re in the movie theatre, you have to turn off your cell phones and you have to be quiet so that you don’t distract everyone else trying to watch the movie. In the theatre, you have on screen to focus on and not 3. You can’t text on your phone while Googling the name of the familiar actor and watch the movie at the same time. All you have is your chair and snack if you choose to have one. I think this is great. Most movies can hold your attention for 2 hours when there’s nothing else to distract you (
unless they’re really boring, in that case just leave). You also can’t rewind a movie in the theatre so if you’re not paying attention, you’ll miss something. And honestly, movies deserve 100% of our attention. All the artists from the actors to director to post-production team to the musicians who did the soundtrack put a lot (and I mean a lot) of time, energy, and thought into the movie. It’s nice to be able to experience a movie without all the outside distractions. You probably won’t miss much in the outside world in 2 hours that you can’t catch up on once the movie is over.
3. The experience of watching with other people
Part of the whole fun of going to the movies is the shared experience with other people. Everyone’s focused on the same thing for 2 hours and they’ve all experienced the same thing. You’ll all laugh together, you’ll all be scared together (if you’re seeing a horror movie), and you might even all shed a tear together. I don’t know, I think there’s something really fun about that. I mean, no one can hear you laugh if you’re lying in bed watching Netflix by yourself and no one else will understand the jokes and references you make later on. But by going to the movie theatre creates a shared experience with dozens of other people, even if you never talk to them. One of my favourite parts about going to the movies is listening to everyone at the end of the movie talk about their favourite parts and what they liked and didn’t like.
4. Movie Theatre Snacks
If what I’ve already said hasn’t convinced you to go see a movie in the theatre, then just go for the snacks (
even though they’ll cost you an arm and a leg). Like seriously, I don’t know what they do to the popcorn at the movie theatre but it’s just so much better than a bag of microwave popcorn or even hot-air popped popcorn that you can make at home. And if you’re going for an early evening movie, there’s also usually stuff like pizza, hot dogs, and fries (and some places are getting even more elaborate than that) so you don’t have to make dinner if you don’t want to! But if you’re like me and you’re cheap or don’t feel like popcorn, you can always pick up a bag of candy at your closest grocery store on your way to the theatre and eat it there. Either way, having snacks at the movie theatre is a must!
Next time a movie that you’ve been dying to see comes out in theatres (*coughstarwarscough*), you should go see it in theatres rather than waiting for it to come out on Netflix or illegally downloading it. I guarantee you’ll enjoy the movie 10x more than if you watch it alone in your bed.
What was the last movie you watched in theatres? Let me know in the comments!
